==His Life==
He was a farmer in Berne for his entire life and highly respected in his community. He was also a dedicated member of the Lutheran Church there.

==Death==
John died at his home in Berne on February 23, 1914 and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in Berne. His wife died on February 4, 1930 at the home of her son-in-law in Rensselaerville. <ref name="Altamont Enterprise"/> She is presumably buried beside her husband.

OBITUARY 
JOHN H. BALL
John H. Ball passed away at his home in Berne, February 23, at the age of seventy years. He had been in poor health for some time and his death was the result of a continued illness of nearly five months.
He was born on a farm near Berne and his entire life was spent in the town of Berne, excepting two and one half years that he served in the civil war, under General W.T. Sherman.
He was a faithful member of the Lutheran church, of Berne, having been a member for nearly fifty years.
The funeral was held at his late residence, Thursday, February 26. An excellent discourse was given by his pastor from these words that he chose before his death: “ For we know that, if your earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens.”
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Leslie Cook of Berne, Mrs. Herbert Swart and Mrs. Minnie Bouton of Rensselaerville, also three grandchildren. Interment was in Woodlawn cemetery, Berne. 
ALTAMONT ENTERPRISE, Friday, February 7, 1930
Mrs. Martha Ball, widow of the late John Ball, passed into the life beyond on Tuesday morning, February 4th. She had been in failing health for some time and was a great care to her son-in-law, Herbert Swart and granddaughter Josephine Swart, who so untiringly care for her until the last.
Mrs. Ball was an old and faithful member of the Lutheran church and although unable to attend services the last few years will be much missed. Had she lived a few days more she would have been 85 years of age.
She is surivived by one daughter, Mrs. Leslie Cook and three grandchildren, Rev. Olney Cook, Miss Josephine Swart and Russell Bouton to mourn her death.
