==Life==
John lived his entire life in Westerlo where his parents lived. After the Civil War in 1870, he was living with [[Polly Lapaugh]] and her grandaughter [[Josephine Lapaugh]], who John would marry five years later.<ref name="1870Census">1870 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> In 1870 he was working as a farmer.<ref name="1870Census"/> A decade later he was living with his wife and a [[Juliette Applebee]] (B. 1858) next store to his parents George and Sarah.<ref name="1880Census">1880 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> On the other side they are living next to William Lapaugh a relative of Josephine.<ref name="1880Census"/> In 1880 John was working as a laborer and had been unemployed for 2 months of the year.<ref name="1880Census"/> In 1890, John was still living in Westerlo and at the time he was recorded in the 1890 US Veterans Census.<ref name="1890Census"/> John and Josephine were recorded again in 1900 and 1910 US Censuses. They were living alone. In 1900 John was working as a carpenter in his own business and he had sufficient income to buy his home with a mortgage.<ref name="1900Census">1900 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> In 1910 their situation was not as bright and they had moved to a rented house and John was working odd jobs.<ref name="1910Census">1910 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref> After Josephine's death, John, who was living alone, was recorded in the 1920 US Census as a widower with no occupation.<ref name="1920Census">1920 US Census, Westerlo, Albany Co, NY</ref>
