Frederick D. Lendrum was born 2 NOV 1922, the daughter of Daniel Jacob Lendrum (16 JUL 1887 -  11 FEB 1957) and Ada Mae Jones (19 JUL 1895 - JUL 1983). His brothers and sisters were:

Fred Lendrum then worked for the U.S. Post Office in Berne as a rural letter carrier for 36 years.

For 36 years, Frederick D. Lendrum delivered mail in Berne no matter what the weather. Later in life, he had a route of a different kind. He visited the dogs of friends and neighbors, giving them a treat of American cheese.

BERNE -- Frederick D. Lendrum , 82, died suddenly at his home on Sunday, July 10, 2005. 
Mr. Lendrum was born in Berne to the late Daniel and Ada Lendrum. He was a graduate of Berne-Knox High School and Albany Business College. Mr. Lendrum served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. at Okinawa during World War II. Fred then worked for the U.S. Post Office in Berne as a rural letter carrier for 36 years. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne. He was the husband of the late Jeanette Lendrum, who died in 1989.
 
He is survived by a son, Steven (Sue) Lendrum of Berne; three daughters, Sharon Nevins of Round Lake, Nancy Lendrum of East Berne and Connie (John) McCarthy of Clarksville; his grandchildren, Ron (Donna) Lendrum of Huntersland, Cheryl Lendrum of Marcellus and Andrew and Stephen McCarthy of Clarksville; great-grandchildren, Heidi Kruse and Heather Lendrum of Huntersland; a brother, Harold Lendrum of Berne; a sister, Marjorie (Ray) Shultes of Berne; his aunt, Lillian Jones of Berne; his dear friend, Janet Platt; also by many nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends. He was predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and James Van Ness and a sister-in-law, Arlene Lendrum. 

A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Helderberg Trail, Berne. Relatives and friends may call at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Berne.

Frederick D. Lendrum

BERNE—For 36 years, Frederick D. Lendrum delivered mail in Berne no matter what the weather. Later in life, he had a route of a different kind. He visited the dogs of friends and neighbors, giving them a treat of American cheese.

"He really liked dogs," said his son, Steven Lendrum. "To the end, he had his cheese route."

Mr. Lendrum died suddenly at his home on Sunday, July 10. He was 82.

Mr. Lendrum was born in Berne to the late Daniel and Ada Lendrum. He was a graduate of Berne-Knox High School and Albany Business College. He served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps in Okinawa, Japan, during World War.
After the war, he worked as a rural letter carrier for the United States Post Office in Berne. He was known for his dedication to the route.

"People didn't wonder if the mail was coming, it was just a matter of when it was going to come," Steven Lendrum said. "I had to get him off of West Mountain with a snowmobile more than once."

Mr. Lendrum was a sports enthusiast. As a young man, he played baseball for Berne's town team. Later,- he played for his church, using the same old-fashioned webless glove he had used in his younger years.

"We used to call it a rag," his son said. After his retirement in 1985, Mr. Lendrum spent his winters in the Florida Keys. There, he took up golf and trout fishing. He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne. Mr. Lendrum was the husband of the late Jeanette Lendrum, who died in 1989. He is survived by his son, Steven Lendrum, and his wife, Sue, of Berne; his daughter, Sharon Nevins, of Round Lake; his daughter, Nancy Lendrum, of East Berne; his daughter, Connie McCarthy, and her husband, John, of Clarksville; his grandson Ron Lendrum and his wife, Donna, of Huntersland; his granddaughter Cheryl Lendrum of Marcellus; his grandsons Andrew and Stephen McCarthy of Clarksville; and his great-grandchildren, Heidi Kruse and Heather Lendrum, of Huntersland.

He is also survived by his brother, Harold Lendrum, of Berne; his sister, Marjorie Shultes, and her husband, Ray, of Berne; his aunt, Lillian Jones, of Berne; his dear friend Janet Piatt; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

His sister and brother-in-law, Helen and James Van Ness, died before him, as did his sister-in-law, Arlene Lundrum.

A funeral service will be held Thursday (today) at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Helderberg Trail, Berne. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Berne.

Arrangements are by Fredendall Funeral Home of Altamont. Memorial contributions may be made to'the Memorial Fund of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1732 Helderberg Trail, Berne, NY, 12023.
