A Walter Church ledger at the Berne Historical Society contains a page showing rent owed by Robert Ball to the former Van Rensselaer Patroon System's West Manor for the year 1854. Robert Ball's wife was Anna Barbara Deitz, great-granddaughter of John Hendrick Dietz who probably homesteaded what became the Ball farm.

*November 2, 1882-[[Robert Ball]] recieved a reciept from [[Walter Church]] for Cash Five hundred dollars - Sundries as per bill Forty seven dollars and his note for Three hundred & twenty-seven dollars of which $160.05 is for rent for farm leased to Adam Deitz Dec 11, 1790 No. 539 Bern and $48.02 for interest and $385.93 in full of his note dated July 11, 1873 and $ 280. as a deposit the interest of which ammount will be an equivalent for the future rents on ninety six acres of said lease owned by him.
